Relaxing 101

“The Joys of sleep? What if sleep is difficult for me? That's not enjoyable!”

There is so much attention paid to diet and exercise, yet consider that you can go a long time with poor diet or exercise without noticing the effect. Yet if you go one night with poor sleep the negative effect can be critical. That is evidence that sleep is perhaps more fundamental to your well-being than either diet or exercise.

Most articles on sleep just offer suggestions like slowing down before bed, having your room be dark and quiet, etc. “The Joys Of Sleep” series of articles will be different. This is about when your head is on the pillow, simple steps that will help you actually fall asleep or fall back to sleep. These will be different than steps you may have previously come across, yet will be very easy to use.

In my clinical practice, my primary focus for 18 years has been helping insomniacs to sleep well again.

How I came to know about sleep: I have been a psychotherapist since 1978. In 1991, a major crisis occurred in my life and I developed severe insomnia, sleeping only three hours a night. Over many years, I resolved my insomnia by inwardly observing my own process of eventually falling asleep. I discovered that as the body and mind are falling asleep, there are subtle, but very easy to experience body sensations that act as the nervous system's signals of sleep.

From this, I created a sleep method comprised of simple, logical steps of these body sensations that effortlessly quiet your mind, calm your body, and gently pull you into sleep. These sensations create a feeling of safety deep inside you (even if your life doesn't feel safe) and the feeling of deep inner safety opens the way into sleep. These body sensations are the “secrets” of sleep.

A first step: Let your tongue relax. The tongue is a fascinating muscle. When many people are stressed, they press their tongue against the roof of their mouth and may not even aware of it. Try this exercise: Make a tight fist and hold it. Now let your first loosen. That is not trying to relax your fist. It is actually less effort to let go of tension. Another quick exercise: Briefly press your tongue against the roof of your mouth to make it tense, then stop doing that and let your tongue be anywhere in your mouth.

On your way to sleep, gently be aware of your tongue. If it is tense, don't make it relax. Realize that your tongue is tired of being tense, so give it permission to relax, like you let your fist relax. Your tongue doesn't need to be very relaxed, just slightly, and it can be anywhere in your mouth. It might feel as if your tongue is getting a bit softer, as if the back of your tongue, back near your throat, has begun to relax. If you need to swallow, that's okay. If your tongue gets tense again, don't get annoyed. Just give it permission to relax again.

People often hold tension in the tongue without being aware of it, as it is part of the involuntary (autonomic) nervous system. Yet it is also fairly easy to allow your tongue to relax, thus your tongue is also part of your voluntary nervous system. This makes your tongue a “bridge” between your voluntary and involuntary nervous systems, which gives you a way to get your involuntary nervous system–the “deeper” part of your nervous system–to begin to relax.

Consider that your tongue is deep in the center of your head and neck area, and relaxing this center area spreads relaxation to your face, head, neck, throat, shoulders, and even your chest. This is like relaxing “from the inside out.” This helps quiet your mind and opens the way to sleep.

A feeling of comfort and safety makes sleep easier. However, many people have so much stress they wonder how they could ever feel comfortable and safe. Consider that you have had many times when you were indoors, protected from the weather outside. If it is stormy and you're outside, you have to brace yourself. Once you are inside, you can relax some. Letting your tongue relax, plus a few other simple body sensations you will learn in coming articles, will create a particular feeling of comfort and safety inside your body. Your awareness can then begin to rest in this inner feeling of comfort and safety. This becomes like a “secret place” to go to inside yourself to ease into sleep. Your mind likes that feeling, begins to rest in that feeling, and begins to become quiet without effort to make it quiet.

Letting your tongue relax is just one step. In the next article, you will learn other simple steps, including what to do if your sleep is disrupted by hormonal changes.

Harrison insists he doesn't want the Rozlyn drama to detract from the important stuff.

“It is my hope that none of this nonsense takes away from what is really important here and that's what's going to take place next Monday night during our finale.”

What is happening next Monday? Oh yeah, Jake will decide which girl, either Tenley or Vienna, will become America's next top ex-fiancee.

That's right, we said it.

Mr. Harrison, the drama is what draws viewers and keeps you employed. If it were boring, no one would watch because for a dating show, you have a remarkably poor record. Only one 'Bachelor' or 'Bachelorette' relationship has brought about a wedding — Trista and Ryan Sutter.

So if the Rozlyns of the world didn't exist to create problems, you'd be left with an unwatchable failure. Who would tune in to see that? At least the drama keeps it entertaining.

Furthermore, you seem more than willing to vilify Rozyln for what she may or may not have done. (And at this point, does it really matter?) But you easily forgave Jason Mesnick for what we all know he did — dump his 'Bachelor'-fiancee Melissa Rycroft on National TV.

Mesnick originally picked Rycroft. But then backtracked on his decision, switching to runner-up Molly Malaney. He then decided the best thing to do was announce this on the 'After the Final Rose' show. Obviously, this is the preferred method of dumping for reality stars.

“I don't know if it makes it any easier for you to swallow, but they are in love and are fighting like hell under an extreme amount of pressure to make this work. I told him that he must really love Molly to have done this,” Harrison wrote of the scandal.

“I wish you all could have hung out with us and just seen that these are real people going through life just like you and I are. It just so happens that what they do is magnified times a thousand because they are on TV,” he added.

By Harrison's measure, if it's all out in the open, it's OK, but if it's a secret and you deny it — it's not? That doesn't add up.

'The Bachelor' and 'The Bachelorette' are two silly shows. Audiences drool as they watch beautiful men and women live and date together, but they stay for the fights, the scandals and all the other ridiculousness. Not because they think two people are actually falling in love.

Stay relaxed! by - ♥ Cherie ♥ -

Stay relaxed! by - ♥ Cherie ♥ -

It's days like today that make me ashamed to be a sportswriter.

No more than a handful of outlets in the Michigan or national media are taking the time to separate the allegations against the Michigan football program—which are serious—from the university's actual findings— which are not.

Few mainstream Michigan sports outlets (save for Rivals' John Borton, whose article is behind a paywall, and of course, the always even-keeled MGoBlog) putting those findings into a proper context for the reader.

Not when, “SERIOUS MAJOR ALLEGATIONS FOUND: IS MICHIGAN FOOTBALL DEADZO?” will get your click from the Google News crawl instead.

Now hear this: Michigan administrators unearthed information that the football team practiced 20 minutes past the NCAA's allotted period. The issue could ultimately come down to whether quality control staff should have included stretching as a voluntary, or mandatory exercise.

Twenty minutes? Is that really grounds for Tweets like this to be sent out by the sensationalists that run the Big Ten Conference's Twitter account?

Additionally, the line between Michigan's quality control staff and its coaches was blurred by the amount of time the two camps spent with each other. This meant it counted as practice time when quality control staff members were present at voluntary workouts, and some of those practices were added towards the final total.

Does the fact that these findings amount to a misunderstanding far short of the dreaded “loss of institutional control,” which will bring nothing close to major repercussions, stop obnoxious asses like Drew Sharp and his dying chorus of “editorialists” at the Detroit Free Press from braying about firing Rodriguez?

God, no.

I can't speak for Michigan Football's quality control staff, but someone at the Freep should be looking into whether the critical line between news writer and editorialist is being blurred on the sports desk.

Supposed news writers should not be launching internal investigations into the programs whose beats they follow, or whose players they interview.

Michael Rosenberg, who broke the original overpracticing story, dishonestly framed his questions to Michigan's true freshmen by saying they were for a human interest piece on new life as an enrollee in college.

The athletes' boilerplate, good-natured responses—that workouts were harder than in high school, that it seemed like practice went on forever—were then turned into grist for the accusatory mill.

That's immorality in sports. That's grounds for an ethical violation. There's the fire, people.

And while news people shouldn't editorialize the information they receive, on the flipside, editorialists like Sharp—and Rosenberg, I suppose—shouldn't pretend they know how to break news, especially if so much of what they write relies on the tinge of bias.

The “Michigan scandal” you'll be reading about in the next few days amounts to a lot of smoke. Smoke; not fire. Misunderstandings are being addressed. Corrections are being made. But insidious intent is nowhere to be found.

Oh, well. The witch-hunt for Rodriguez's head by evil men without Michigan's best interests at heart continues. More and more is made of less and less. America's insatiable appetite for scandal continues. You've heard the objections against sensational media, and unfortunately, they're all correct.

I rarely address Michigan Football. My intention at the Bleacher Report has, and will continue being to bring a national perspective—even if I slip one too many Michigan recruits in the to-watch-for slideshows.

But this behavior is beyond the pale. Supposedly accredited newspapers—the Freep —are blatantly attempting to shore up their page views by resorting to yellow headlines and whack journalists who are no doubt encouraged to speak irrationally.

In doing so, they've lost sight of their first and most important goal: reporting the news, not creating it (not to get all Richard Nixon on you, but that is their purpose, right?).

In turn, their writers—good or bad, beat or editorial—have lost their integrity, and their minds.

Read this discussion between Dr. Lafayette Granger and Crazy W. Fox, a Native American Indian; a descendent of Crazy Horse who help defeat Custer at the Little Big Horn in 1876.

Dr. Granger: It is evident you live in a dream world; It the trend that that must be changed. Ellsworth said when you get into a bad situation you must change it as soon as possible. One person said I would rather be an inch from Hell going in the other direction than a mile from Hell going towards it.
It is not dream that President Obama is an inch from financial Hell for America.
Crazy W. Fox: Without question he is brilliant and charming; however, he is surrounded with questionable unqualified characters. This is not suppressing because he has always been attracted to extremist like Wright and Bill Ayers. Michelle is charming and smart too. She was never proud of her country two years ago but now expresses great joy at being an American. They have two beautifully children and are a happy family.
We believed in Obama and thought he would transform America utilizing his talents to help us. Our hopes have been shattered. He is a Camelion.
Dr. Granger: I believe President Obama has helped America because he has awakened the children of the “Greatest Generation” and they have the same blood flowing in their veins as their fathers. I expect to see a return to our founding fathers constitution and elect people to congress and the White House who will save America. It will not be Lindsey Graham, Charlie Crist, or John McCain because they are like the children of Israel who needed to die before reaching the Promised Land. It will be Rubio, Palin, Brown and new blood that will stop spending us into oblivion, reduce taxes, and put prayer back into our schools.
Stop dreaming and wake up to reality that we are not far from Financial Hell and must turn 180% immediately.
